What is bulky waste?
As the name suggests, bulky waste is waste that is too large to fit in a usual bin. In other words, these are the discarded household items that are too large and unmanageable to be disposed of in the normal waste garbage bins.
What belongs to the bulky waste?
Bulky waste includes all those items which are taken away with you during relocation. However, floor coverings, doors, wall coverings and car tires are excluded. Items that need to be disposed of include electrical appliances, scrap metal and hazardous materials.
How many times a year is the bulky waste collection service free in Berlin?
There is no free bulky waste collection service in Berlin, unlike many other municipalities in the Federal Republic of Germany. However, BSR offers a collection service for which a fee is charged. A waiting period of up to 3 weeks is included in the regular tariff. Furthermore, the heavy waste must be carried to the staircase or in front of the door by yourself.
What happens to the bulky waste?
The wood contained in bulky waste is burned in biomass power plants to generate energy. Disruptive materials such as mattresses and upholstered furniture are burned in waste incineration plants. Metals are reused in steel mills. Plastics contained in bulky waste are used to make fabrics (polyester), carpets or plastic boxes.
What happens if I dispose of bulky waste illegally?
In the past few months, high fines have been imposed in Berlin for illegally disposing of bulky waste. The fine for illegal waste disposal can be up to 50,000 euros. (See also: Section 326 of the German Criminal Code). Anyone caught searching or dumping bulky waste on the street, can be prosecuted for theft. If you come across illegal disposal of bulky waste, you can report it to the Public Order Office through the Berlin Service Portal.
